Trauma & Difficult Experiences
Therapy in Meaford, Ontario

Sometimes experiences stay with us long after they've happened. You might find yourself reacting strongly to certain situations, questioning yourself, struggling with trust, or noticing patterns in relationships that are difficult to change.

Not everyone identifies their experiences as trauma. You may simply recognize that something from your past, a difficult relationship, or a stressful period in your life continues to affect how you feel today.

At Lilystone Therapy & Wellness, I offer a supportive, collaborative space to explore these experiences, understand how they may be influencing your thoughts, emotions, and relationships, and consider approaches that support meaningful change.

In-person psychotherapy is available in Meaford, with virtual appointments offered across Ontario.

How Difficult Experiences Can Affect You

Difficult experiences can influence how we see ourselves, relate to others, and respond to situations in the present. Sometimes these connections are clear. Other times, we notice recurring feelings or patterns without fully understanding where they come from.

You might recognize experiences such as:

  • Feeling on edge, guarded, or easily overwhelmed

  • Replaying upsetting events or conversations

  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships

  • Being highly self-critical or carrying feelings of guilt or shame

  • Avoiding situations, conversations, or reminders of difficult experiences

  • Feeling disconnected from your emotions or struggling to express them

  • Noticing recurring relationship patterns that are difficult to change

These responses can have many contributing factors. Therapy provides an opportunity to explore your experiences at a pace that feels manageable, without assuming that any particular event or experience defines you.

How Therapy Can Help With Trauma & Difficult Experiences

Therapy can involve more than managing symptoms. It can also provide an opportunity to understand how past experiences, relationships, and patterns may be influencing your life today.

My approach is collaborative and draws on several therapeutic approaches, depending on your experiences, needs, and goals:

  • Attachment-informed therapy to explore how earlier relationships and experiences may influence your sense of safety, self-worth, and connections with others.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to identify and work with unhelpful beliefs and patterns that may have developed through difficult experiences.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed strategies to support emotional awareness, regulation, and coping with distress.

I also offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a structured psychotherapy approach that may be considered when working with distressing experiences and memories.

Together, we can explore which approaches are appropriate for you, at a pace that considers your comfort, readiness, and goals.
