Addiction & Recovery Therapy
in Meaford, Ontario

Struggling with substance use or trying to make changes in your relationship with alcohol or drugs can be complicated. You may find yourself caught between wanting things to be different and relying on familiar ways of coping with stress, difficult emotions, or experiences.

Addiction and substance use concerns can affect your relationships, emotional well-being, confidence, and sense of control. You might be questioning your substance use, considering making changes, working toward recovery, or trying to maintain changes you've already made.

At Lilystone Therapy & Wellness, I offer a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to explore your experiences, understand patterns that may be contributing to substance use, and work toward goals that are meaningful to you.

Drawing on over 15 years of experience in hospital and community healthcare settings, including mental health and addictions services, I use an individualized approach that recognizes the connections between emotional well-being, difficult life experiences, relationships, and substance use.

In-person psychotherapy is available in Meaford, with virtual appointments offered across Ontario.

Understanding Addiction & Substance Use Patterns

Substance use can develop for many reasons. For some people, alcohol or drugs become a way of managing stress, anxiety, difficult emotions, or painful experiences. For others, patterns of use may gradually change over time, becoming harder to manage or creating consequences they hadn't anticipated.

You may recognize experiences such as:

  • Using alcohol or substances to cope with stress, anxiety, or difficult emotions

  • Finding yourself using more frequently or in larger amounts than intended

  • Feeling conflicted about your substance use or uncertain about making changes

  • Experiencing guilt, shame, or frustration related to substance use

  • Noticing changes in your relationships, mood, sleep, or daily functioning

  • Struggling with cravings or returning to familiar patterns after making changes

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the expectations of others or pressure to change

  • Wanting to understand the connection between substance use, past experiences, and emotional well-being

Substance use concerns often exist alongside other challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, or relationship difficulties. Understanding these connections can be an important part of developing a treatment approach that reflects your individual needs.

Whether you're beginning to question your substance use, considering change, or working to maintain recovery, therapy can offer a space to explore your experiences and identify what matters to you.

How Therapy Can Help With Addiction & Recovery

Making changes in your relationship with alcohol or substances is rarely a straightforward process. Therapy can provide space to better understand your experiences, explore patterns that may be contributing to substance use, and develop strategies that support your individual goals.

My approach is collaborative, nonjudgmental, and tailored to where you are in the process of change. Together, we may explore:

  • Understanding patterns and triggers: Identifying situations, emotions, relationships, and experiences that may influence substance use.

  • Emotional regulation and coping: Developing strategies to manage distress, anxiety, cravings, and difficult emotions without relying solely on substances.

  • Exploring underlying experiences: Understanding how trauma, grief, attachment patterns, or other life experiences may contribute to current coping strategies.

  • Motivation and meaningful change: Exploring ambivalence, identifying personal goals, and considering changes that align with your values.

  • Relationships and boundaries: Understanding interpersonal patterns, rebuilding trust, and developing healthier ways of communicating and setting boundaries.

  • Maintaining change and navigating setbacks: Identifying supports, recognizing early warning signs, and developing strategies to respond to challenges without judgment.

I draw on evidence-informed approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed strategies, and attachment-informed perspectives.

I also offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a structured psychotherapy approach that uses guided imagery and eye movements to help process distressing memories and experiences. ART may be considered when unresolved experiences are contributing to emotional distress or substance use patterns, depending on your individual needs and clinical assessment.

Recovery can look different for everyone. Whether your goal is to reduce substance use, work toward abstinence, or maintain changes you've already made, therapy can help you explore your options and develop a plan that reflects your circumstances and priorities.
